Hello friends of Ormiston & District,
This letter is to inform everyone interested in the Ormiston region of a new initiative underway to
celebrate the heritage and spirit of our community. Please read on for the beginnings of a plan that
will evolve to sustain the district’s history and preserve a bit of infrastructure in the old townsite.
On December 31 of this year, the Ormiston Baptist Church will dissolve its long tenure as an
operating, charitable church. The church was moved into Ormiston in 1959. For 65
years, the church served a congregation, not only for the immediate Ormiston district, but for
parishioners from Ogema and Viceroy to Crane Valley and Cardross. Generations of families made
up loyal members throughout the decades. The proud little church stood as a sturdy reminder to the
residents and visitors of our town as a Mixture of faith, community and endurance.
To preserve the structure at its rightful location in Ormiston is the initial objective of a new
endeavour. District history will also be a key initiative. As such, a non~profit organization that is
known as the Ormiston & District Historical Society Inc. has been registered. The local trustees of
the Ormiston Baptist Church have directed the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada to transfer the
title of the church and the manse to the new society.
The society will now be launched. The purpose, goals, mission and brand of the new society will be
formulated over the next few months. These guidelines will steer the Ormiston & District Historical
Society on a concise and clear course for its existence. Going forward, we will define creative
opportunities for the structures and work together to preserve the district’s history.
As of today, the Ormiston & District Historical Society is at ground zero, and it will be interesting to
see where we take it. I am reaching out now to recruit a committee to guide the new society.
Please contact me at blamberton@classiccanadiantours.com if you would like to be part of an initial
steering committee. Stay tuned at the Ormiston Reunion website (ormistonreunion.com) or the
Ormiston, Sask Facebook page for updates as we get organized and make progress.
